The environment of a workplace plays a huge role in the wellbeing and productivity of employees, which is one of many reasons why employers should do everything in their power to prevent workplace bullying.
A good workplace where co-workers and management are generally positive and collaborative makes for a healthy environment people find easier to work in. A workplace where co-workers or management are abusive, condescending, or otherwise hostile negatively impacts one’s mental health and makes one dread work.
What Is Workplace Bullying?
Unfortunately, bullying is not restricted to grade school. Bullying can happen anywhere, anytime, regardless of your profession or the ages of the people you work with. Workplace bullying consists of persistent behavior and actions meant to make someone feel attacked or unwelcome. Sometimes, these actions include racist, sexist, homophobic, or other such descriminatory remarks. These result in a hostile workplace.
What Are The Effects Of Workplace Bullying?
As you may expect, bullying hurts. Especially if it is at your workplace, where you spend a third of your life, workplace bullying can seriously impact your mental health, resulting in depression, anxiety, and other such issues. It increases stress and decreases productivity and job satisfaction, because no one is going to perform their best when they’re being bullied.
For employers, you should care about the wellbeing of your employees because they are people who work for you and you should want to provide them with the best possible working environment and make them feel valued. If workplace bullying goes unaddressed, this could mean you’re losing good workers because they want to get out of a toxic environment.
It could also affect possible future employment, because if people hear that you let bullies get away with their behavior, they won’t want to work for you. And who can blame them?
Workplace bullying is a serious issue, creating a toxic environment people feel unwelcome in. Fortunately, if you are concerned about or currently experiencing workplace bullying, you are not powerless against it. Here are some things you can do when faced with workplace bullying.
What Can You Do About Workplace Bullying?
What can be done about workplace bullying differs between the employer and the employee.
As An Employer
Employers can work to prevent workplace bullying in a number of ways. They can provide bullying prevention training, so as to educate all employees on what is and is not acceptable behavior and what they can do if they experience or notice workplace bullying. They can ensure that they monitor the atmosphere of their workplace and that the management is being respectful to all. They can ensure that they have a process that people can follow if they have concerns or complaints that they need to file.
They can encourage people to speak up if they notice something that constitutes workplace bullying. If you see something, say something. This only works though, if the employer is committed to ensuring that everyone knows workplace bullying is not tolerated. If someone makes a complaint or reports something, it is up to you to act on that in order to curb the issue and create a safer, more friendly workplace.
As An Employee
If you experience or notice workplace bullying, it’s important to know the process your workplace has so that you can report it and take the necessary steps to ensure others know about it, so that they can do something about it. If, however, your employer does not act on your complaints, you may have to resort to other options.
It’s unrealistic to expect anyone to just put up with being bullied. If you don’t feel safe at a job, it is time to consider other options. If you work through a temp agency, you can both report the unsafe workplace and have another job lined up quickly. You deserve to feel safe and valued and welcomed at work.
